Examples of our Trials expertise
If you think you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This should include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine which vaccinations you need. Some vaccinations are only available privately, and if so, the practice nurse will advise you to make an appointment with a Travel Clinic.
There is some further information below about countries and vaccinations required when visiting them:
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines time to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

To help us offer the appropriate advice, please fill out the online form before coming to see the nurse.

We are lucky enough to have Nurse Practitioner Jo McLellan at the practice to provide further support to your medical care. Nurse Practitioners are specialist nurses who work in partnership with, and under the guidance of your GP.
Jo is a highly experienced, trained Nurse Practitioner who has achieved additional higher qualifications in order to provide advanced nursing care. She is also a nurse prescriber.
Nurse Practitioners can provide treatment and advice for many problems for which you may traditionally have seen a doctor in the past. Their main area of expertise is the management of common/minor illnesses and minor injury.
A Nurse Practitioner can assess and examine you, make a diagnosis and provide treatment and advice including a prescription if required. She can make referrals to most hospital doctors or other health care professionals, and admit patients into hospital where necessary. Although she is unable to sign a sickness certificate she can make arrangements for one to be signed for you. She will work closely with your GP and liaise frequently with them about your care.
Examples of Common Illnesses Suitable for a Nurse Practitioner Appointment
Some patients, often those with long standing medical problems may need an appointment with a doctor. The Nurse Practitioner is usually able to assess the situation and in some cases will organise initial blood tests and other investigations prior to arranging a follow up appointment with a GP.

NHS Health Checks
NHS health checks are being offered to people between 40 and 74 once every five years. The check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes.
The health check should take about 20-30 minutes and is based upon straight forward questions and measurements such as age, sex, family history, height, weight and blood pressure. There will be a simple finger prick blood test to measure your cholesterol level.
Following the check you will receive free personalised advice about what you can do to stay healthy. Take a look at the NHS Health Check website www.healthcheck.nhs.net for more information about how it could benefit you.
If you have received a letter regarding a health check, all you need to do is phone the surgery on 01225 421137 and book an appointment with a Nurse. Alternatively you can have your health check at any of the following pharmacies.
